Karekare Beach Shoot Location

Only 45 minutes west of Auckland’s CBD this unique property sits discreetly hidden from the world and only 5 minutes walk from Karekare beach.

The award-winning, 1980’s Andrew Patterson-designed house offers an expansive interior space that has no real dividing line between indoor and outdoor and the sheltered amphitheatre leading off the living areas. The house was designed as a mirror to the majestic cave on the hill opposite and has references to Greek temple design.

There are multiple flat grassed areas including the amphitheatre, a platform above the house, an orchard, and two large paddocks below for parking and/or location fields making this a great shoot location or base for shoots at Karekare beach.

More History of the house:
The privacy, isolation, lack of distractions and close proximity to nature led Neil Finn and Crowded House to record the album Together Alone at the property.

Sir Edmund Hillary, Neil Finn and Crowded House, Scarlett Johansson, Radiohead, Che Fu, Pearl Jam and Elle Macpherson are just a sprinkling of the famous people that have been associated with this unique Karekare property.
The location will also be familiar to viewers of the film The Piano, which included beach scenes shot at Karekare and Piha. The actor, Harvey Keitel lived at the house during filming.
