Description
Co-working space available in the prestigious heritage building of The Arts Centre and its community of arts and creative tenancies.
The co-working space in The Arts Centre was designed with collaboration, connection and creativity in mind and offers flexible options to suit your needs. The co-working space opened in 2023 following a complete restoration and refurbishment of the building to create a lovely modern, bright and airy space.
Desks can be rented on an exclusive basis including a desk, chair, screen, data access, use of printer and photocopier, use of the bookable meeting room, and use of common space (kitchen and communal rest space with free tea and coffee). Or we offer a number of hot desking arrangements, whereby you can use a shared desk for a specified number of days each week. Nearby can be found bars, restaurants, food trucks, art galleries, museums and performance spaces and venues for hire.
The Arts Centre is the largest collection of category 1 listed heritage buildings in Aotearoa New Zealand. The co-working space now sits at its heart, occupying most of the Engineering Extensions building built in 1923 and the top floor of the Electrical Engineering building built in 1902. The buildings have been seismically strengthened, restored, and linked by a new overhead bridge, the Bridge of Aspiration. The building restoration has been meticulous, and heritage features have been retained wherever possible, down to student and thespian graffiti in the rafters.
When Professor Robert Julian Scott was appointed the first head of the Engineering department at Canterbury College in 1889, little did he know that his pioneering vision would lay the foundation for a co-working space that seamlessly merges the past and the future; the arts and the sciences. Few workspaces can boast such a direct link to the city’s history of technological innovation. You can even host a board meeting immediately above the site of New Zealand’s first television transmission.
